parnsips and manure
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:25 »
Hi all,
quick question..will parsnips grow normally in horse manure? or will they become all misshapen like a carrott would? as all my beds are filled with manure i'm hoping it will be ok. home grown parnips are just the best!
cheers

root crops tend to do better in poor soils - that is why they are last in a 4 way rotation system. But i have never had much luck with parsnips. Guess all you can do is try  :)

I am trying mine in big pots this year, as they did not do well in my raised beds last year as i had to much manure in them. I am trying what John put in his book, multi purpose compost with sharp sand 70:30. Fingers crossed.

If the manure is finely sieved, you should be ok; if not, try making a deep wide hole with a crowbar and filling it with sieved soil or compost.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I must admit that I manure all my beds heavily every fall, and parsnips are direct seeded wherever there's a good space. And I get primarily lovely long straight parsnips, with only a few forked ones which no doubt hit some of the many stones still in my soil. So yes, you can grow in manured ground - I've done it for years. And I also seed my carrots in manured soil and they're so sweet people wonder if I added sugar.

I use a bulb-planter tool to make a deep hole
