Runner Beans
« on: April 12, 2010, 22:33 »
HI, total novice.  Made myself 3 very attractive cane wigwams (chuffed), one about 5 foot, one 6 and the other is over 7 foot.  I would welcome some advice on what to grow on them.  I've put in some pea seeds round the smallest one and was thinking of indulging myself with sweet peas on the 6 foot one.  Am thinking of runner beans for the 7 foot one but am wonder if they (or anything else) will grow that tall?  Help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Think your plan is about right.

Runner beans usually grow to about 8 feet although there are 1 or 2 people on here who reckon theirs are the same as the ones in Jack and the beanstalk!  (You can always pinch the growing tips off!)

I'm growing climbing french beans this year :D.  Lovely.  Have got fed up with runner beans  - you'll end up with loads .  I use 8' canes, but as I sink them into the ground they are 7'.  A word of advice, pinch off the tops when they reach the top - don't let them grow any higher as you will end up with blackfly, and you have to spray the lot with a bug kill spray :(.

Thanks very much to both of you.  Profile duly updated ;)  and I will be sure to pinch off the growing tips from the runner beans  :)  Hope to try French beans next year.

I don't like runner beans. I grow Borlotto beans for the seeds.

They dry well and store for ages. Use them in stews and casseroles.

I'm also going to try kidney beans this year, if I can find some space.
