Can Taste be affected by too much fertilizer?
« on: April 11, 2010, 21:18 »
I have a chempak feed, its:  15-25-25.  Now compared to Tomorite thats like:  4-2-8 or something similiar.
If i gave my tomatoes 15-25-25 would it spoil the flavour?

Just give them about ¼ the quantity.

Doesn't matter - I assume you are talking about Chempak 8 which is a soluble feed so by the time you have used it correctly diluted according to the instructions it will have the same effect. Just decide what to do by calculating the cost per week.

Can Taste be affected by too much fertilizer? I reckon so. Different growing conditions affect flavour. Sometimes is seem to me that the tomato plants that have the hardest life produce fruit with the most flavour even though there is an reduced overall yields and the they are often smaller. Might have more to do with another of the variables though ( I suspect water and sunshine).

My lecturer told me that plants want Nitrogen Phosphate and Potash plus some trace elements. As long as they get them they don't care where they come from.

Don't think it will make a difference as long as they get their 5 a-day

I'm sure it has an effect, especially with tomatoes, strawberries etc. Maybe too much fertilizer prompts plants to fruit too quickly, and too abundantly without fully developing the taste.
I hoe, I hoe, it's off to weed I go.

The best tomatoes I ever tasted were on goats poo  ::) rather than chemical fertilisers

So what I'm saying is that, yes, it does make a difference what you feed them on  :)

It's not just the amount but the ratio of each chemical that matters. Different plants require different ratios for optimal growth, hence your tomorite has a ratio that will have been optimised for tomatoes' requirements.
