Bolted spring cabbage.
« on: April 10, 2010, 13:32 »
I'm really hacked of because after spending a winter watching my cabbages grow, the last couple of days of glorious sun has made some of them bolt. Is that really game over when it comes to eating them or can I salvage any parts of them and what can I do to prevent the rest of them bolting? :(
My wife made all the pies, then I ate them!!!

brassicas can bolt if they are not firmed into the soil , not deep enough , could be wind/root rock,

start off another batch of cabbages , lesson learned, it can be tiresome/ frustrating  but start again

The same thing has happened to my Kale. After starting off well before the cold winter, growth stopped until about three weeks ago but noticed yesterday that flowers are forming. Pinched them out to try to keep things going a bit longer. :(

I hope that you ate the flower buds, just like sprouting broccoli.

It's really annoying isn't it. I've had this happen to me in previous years. Ideally brassicas need to be started off slowly, so not with heat but say in a coldframe and transplanted out from there.

I've had years where I've actually used shade netting over brassicas, lettuce, florence fennel, pak choi and rocket to stop them from bolting.

Its all very time consuming adjusting the position according to the daily temperature. You can try planting out but just in case do a second sowing to cover all eventualities!
