hi, im planning on planting out my first spuds 2moz, ive dug over and weeded my bed and am wondering should i dig in some well rotted manure i have got as i plant the spuds or do you only do this prior to planting. I could not do this earlier as ive only just got the plot.

I find it better to spread out the manure and work it in prior to planting so that the plants can reach out for the manure. You don't want it too concentrated in one spot as it would cause a lot of green top growth at the expense of tuber growth. If you can't manage to work it in, then plant the spuds and do a surface mulch with the manure but not too heavy.

i read somewhere that if you left it too late to manure the area before your spuds, that a good handfull off manure in the hole with the seed tattie will do it the world of good. Thats wrong is it???

I wait till i've earthed them up then spread in the trench between the rows.
