Silicon to fix glass in an old greenhouse?
« on: April 05, 2010, 13:41 »
We have a nice old greenhouse with 'fairly good' wooden frame. About six panes need replacing and others have slipped. The glass was all originally pinned in place.

I am wondering about using a silicon sealer to 'fix' the glass. What are the pros and cons of that idea?

Don't laugh and thanks for any help.

You could try reading stree's comments on page five of "Building a lean-to green house".
It's a few threads below this one at the moment.

For fixing glass an acetoxy cure would be best, This will be stated on the tube, either this or neutral  cure if thats all that is to hand.
You will need to ensure that the glass is as clean as you can get it, dust algae mould slime etc will all prevent a bond or a seal. Wipe it down with a sugar soap solution then thoroughly dry. Same goes for timber, if its wet or rotten it will not bond. Alloy should be scrubbed free of efflorescence ( powder) and ideally keyed with a primer.
High or low modulus will be OK for glass, its fairly stable in temperature ranges at these small sizes.
The modulus is the amount of "give" when it is set, low mod = low resistance etc. this accommodates thermal expansion and contraction and resists breaking the seal through the material flexing under load such as wind.

i used the putty tubes you get from wicks and it worked great to hold them in. Only issue was taking them out!!!
