Peas in guttering
« on: April 04, 2010, 22:01 »
I keep hearing people recommend sowing peas in guttering, which i have done for a number of seasons now.

However, when it comes to planting out, mine rarely ' slide out easily'

What is the trick for this? Am i the only one who makes a mess of it? Okay they end up growing ok, but it is never easy to get them out of the gutter without feeling your hurting them.

May be you don't leave them long enough to get roots entwined

flood them with copious amounts of water before you slide them out.
the roots will become turgid and relax any grip.

Taken out of context I did a double take there -- dangers of using a ladder alone and all that

It is possible that i don't leave them long enough.

Aunt Sally, do you punch drainage holes in the clingfilm?  Does it really make it easier?

Will try to leave them longer and flood with water, have left it too late for the clingfilm.

Holes just at the ends of the guttering and raise one end a little to drain.

BlackBob's answer is what I would have said. I struggled as well wit peas in guttering until I saw someone on the telly flooding the gutters before sliding them out.  Tried it and it worked. I also limit the length of guttering to about 4 ft to make them easier to handle.

I slide mine out in foot long chunks. Just divide up the gutter with a  trowel.

I give them a good soak first and then, when you put them in, just shuffle the gutter along the trench, this eases them out nicely. Don't use long lengths, 4 foot is fine, you can always plant two at a time if not enough.
