Broad beans in polytunnel
« on: April 04, 2010, 15:58 »
Tried The Sutton (short type) last year but they grew quite fast and only had a few flowers and beans on the top six inches. Is this because the temp. was too high or could I hae pinched out the top when say 6 inches high and got them to tiller.

Any help for this years crop pse. Thanks

Why did you grow them in a polytunnel?  They do perfectly well outside.

Bit surprised by the negative replies.

I use my greenhouse and polytunnel for early veg. We try to be self sufficient but by mid May are usually out of, or fed up with, home frozen veg and our eating potatoes have long shoots on
So into the polytunel, in March  go Hispi Spring Cabbage, seed sown in the kitchen and then brought on in the greenhouse, Foremost Potatoes, just up, early carrots, broad beans and next week dwarf beans.
All ready by mid May. Clear them out when outside veg. are  ready.
Plant out tomatoes and cucumber and when they have finished bring in late flowering chrysanths which with luck will provide flowers into December.
I forgot the strawberries which should be on flower in two weeks.
So what do others use their polytunels for?

I also have broad beans in my poly as well as peas,, both these were a very early sowing,  and are now looking good for an early harvest.. also have overwintered onions, and carrots,,   also have tomato and pepper various varities that seem to be doing fine..
cabbages, cauliflowers parsnips waiting to go in the ground outdoors once it drys up a bit.. leek seedlings some various flower seedlings, sweetcorn about 3 inch tall at mo..
various lettuces, radishes. plus other seedlings that will be put in there.. once ground warmed/dryied up a bit alot will be moved outdoors leaving the poly for toms peppers cucumbers and some salad crops that grow faster and slug free in there..

I wonder if it was because "The Sutton" is a dwarf variety. I grew it once because the packet said it was suitable for overwintering and they were sold out of Aquadulce (my normal variety). I wasn't impressed with performance of "The Sutton" ...
