how long can you chit for

was planning to put all the spuds in tomorrow however the ground is very wet to wet i think how long can a potato chit for before its useless so to speak mine are 7 weeks now look really healthy except some are a little soft can thay be given anything to rejuvenate them while they wait to go underground?

Your chitting spuds will be fine as long as the chits are not excessively long and thin and are still a healthy red and green colour (thin and white is bad)

As far as your thread title is concerned, the answer is "Depends on how much chilli was in last night's curry!!!"  :lol:

One of the reasons why you chit is so that you can delay planting if bad weather delays planting. The chitted potato life clock is ticking. They will not hurt if they are a bit wrinkled.

There was a lot of stuff on here earlier saying that maincrop are not worth chitting. When the weather is like this it is well worth it.

They will do better out of the ground than in it if the soil is cold and wet.

Potatoes need a soil temperature of 45oF to grow and moist but not wet.  If it is colder than that and wet the potatoes may well start to rot beore they grow.

thankyou for the replys they look ok but its unbelievable that they can chit for this long i will keep them out of the ground then.... as when i went to the  lotty the onions,garlic, shallots were loving it  but i think to wet for the potatoes

give them a light spray with MAXICROP helps no end.
