How long should I give hatching
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:00 »
Hello,  Well Yummy has been on her eggs since the 16th May.  I had a few problems with eggs rolling or being pushed out from under her at the beginning so I am not sure if any will hatch.

Should I take them away if none have hatched? If so when would it be? I know its 18-21 days for incubation but I don't want to leave it  long as I think she will sit forever if I don't take matters in hand.

I have tried to see whats happening but I can't work out if they are ok or not, I didn't do the candling as I thought I would just wait and see.

Thanks

Hi Slowef, a friend of mine has had hens sitting stealing each others eggs for 3 and a half weeks now 24-25 days, and only this morning could we hear a 'cheep cheep' of a hatching chick, also my clocker was due on Sat but still nothing yet, but know they are all fertile as I candled them last week and discarded any dudd ones.  You can give her an extra 3 or 4 days if you like it wont hurt her and if nothing happens take her off and get her back to her old self... The chicken of mine I'm talking about though, sat for 3 and a half weeks, with nothing to show for it, I took her off and put her back with her cockerel and hen buddys and the next morning she was sat again, that was also over 3 weeks ago, so shes been there for nearly 7 weeks sitting on eggs, I hope this time she has a result and can get back to normal.... if not I dont think I will let her try ever again, just to save the waiting (for her) for nothing... If I get any chicks I will reply again ok.... Best of luck to both of us then eh :)

oh thanks for replies.  I will give her until about day 25 then see if anything looks like happening and remove them.  Its such a shame she is such an eager little tryer

Good luck with both your clutches

Oh I am so sorry, what was the cause of they dying?  Hope the rest of your "family" are ok

I must say that for cute and loveable nature Goslings are the best, they are so friendly I adore mine.  I hope thay stay that way when they are full grown.

the other chickens trampled them the hen they were under is proving to be unreliable as a mother great sitter but bad mother, lets chicks wounder off or walks away and leaves them.

Aww thank you, she is pretty a great mummy  but a real tarter and stands for no nonsense.

Went up today and another egg had been thrown out down to 5 now, still no signs of hatchlings :-(
