How large is the hole in the lid? maybe you could grow the courgette in a large ish pot, then cut the bottom out and plant so the roots can go down in the soil and the rim of the pot sits proud so the stem dosnt get wet, then you could water into the lid making sure it dosnt over flow into the pot the plant is in. if that makes sense

If you really want to have a go at using those lids why not try one the way up it was meant to go?

The water would drain away from the stem and onto the soil probably near enough to water the plant...  ;)

I'm still a bit concerned that if we get a really warm summer () you might find the leaves dry out / are scorched by the radiated heat from the metal.   It would also be a wonderful place for slugs to snooze......

Experiment with one plant and see?

Used the right way up with bubble wrap in the chimney they made great snow/frost protection for my newly planted rhubarb :D.

I've got something similar for my rhubarb... a long truncated metal cone - I've no idea what it was but it was in my dad's old shed - perhaps something to do with his chicken set up from long ago (heater / feeder / hopper?).

I grow cucumbers in a cold frame and have wire netting about 3 inches above the ground for the plants and cucumbers to lie on. You could do the same with the courgettes, just make a wooden box and stretch netting across it to keep the plants off the ground.
You will never find time for anything. If you want time you must make it.

I like this idea, thanks  ;) but how do you cope with keeping the weeds under control?
