Broad bean confusion
« on: April 01, 2010, 15:51 »
Please help! I haven't grown them before.

I planted some beans in modules two weeks ago, along with some sweet peas. The sweet peas came up and the beginning of the week but yesterday was the first day a shoot had come up on the beans. However, when I picked the modules up this morning, I noticed there was a white shoot coming out of the bottom of each broad bean modules so... some stupid questions...

1 - is this supposed to happen?
2 - if not, why is it happening?
3 - did i plant them upside down? :nowink:
4 - what do i do now?

Please help a confused girlie!
Thanks  :)

It sounds like your beans are doing fine, they do not seem to mind which way up you plant them, I plant them on their sides. How big are the pots? I plant mine 3 beans to a 4inch pot.

I planted one bean per 2" module. Do you think I should leave them in these pots or move them on?

If the roots are poking out of the bottom I would move them into bigger pots, otherwise I would leave them. I am no expert, I have only grown them last 2 yrs and again this yr.

Sounds like a root to me so pot them on into deeper pots.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

They are in peat pots so seeing as they don't have a shoot yet shall i just put the whole pot into a bigger pot?

Plants are amazing things - on the whole, the bit that needs to grow upwards will always find a way to grow up. And the root will always find a way to grow down.

Exception to the rule being the upside-down growing tomatoes  :D

I had a similar problem with mine. I planted them all out on my allotment, as if the roots get too big they may get broken off.
I have found that the main reason for failure to germinate of broad beans is that  the mice pinch them, so I don't sow them direct, but if they have already germinated they are safe.

I would leave them in those modules until the leaves emerge and then put them into the ground. In fact you can plant them before they emerge if you are nervous about root damage. The big mistake is to let them get leggy before planting. When you plant them put them in good and deep so that the stem underground suppots the plant lated when it is covered in bean pods. 3 to 4 inches deep.

Thanks for all your advice. I've been keeping an eye on them over the weekend and the roots are really starting to pop out of the bottom of the peat pots. So I'm planning to re-pot them tonight and keep them inside before I re-pot them for the final time outside when they're well established. That feels like the right thing to do, but there's every possibility it may go completely wrong!!!  :nowink:
