the carrot pringle experiment
« on: March 31, 2010, 08:49 »
My grilfriend & I were left with an empty tub of Pringles a few weeks ago & decided to try to grow one or two carrots in it to see how long they would grow.

So here is the first sign of life in the tub. I'll keep you all updated of the progress. :)

did you use ordinary compost? if so there may be too much 'food' in it, when they are being grown in drain pipes for shows they mix lots of sand in, the theory being that they grow down looking for food.  will be interesting to see the results

Thanks for your replies. We used our own compast with a bit of bought in one so yes might be a bit to rich, I expect they might fork but that's the whole point of the experiment & mainly a bit of fun really.
We are not planning to atend any shows, the carrot will surelly end up in our tummies

I have a sneaking suspicion that this was one of those good ideas that came after eating those pringles to accompany a glass or two of some nice beverage!   :D :D

It would be a great idea for a kids gardening competition ...  <thinks> ........

When I used to show, I grew my long carrots and parsnips using a multi purpose compost without added sand. :D

Hahaha,

I have done the same experiment, but instead of pringles cartons I have used the inners of kitchen towel rolls. (Same lenght but a bit thinner)

Mine are just sprouting now so I will also add my results when they are ready  :)

Great post.  :)

Did you put drainage holes in the pringles tube, or take the end off or something?

Like the idea and my nippers could well be treated to some pringles this weekend, in the interests of research of course. However the carrots will need watering at times so will the cardboard pringles tube start unravelling and falling apart? Hard to see a cardboard tube staying intact for months once it gets damp.

They've got that shinny coating on the inside so I think it should hold longer than usual.
Ours still in one piece.

Have had a brilliant idea whilst visiting my daughter this afternoon. No Pringles tubes there, and we are all on a diet, but ........... she gets through an incredible amount of formula boxes with her 9 month old baby. I reckon we could fit at least four or five carrots in each one!  :)
