Will persistent rain harm my seeds?
« on: March 29, 2010, 15:28 »
I have recently sowed four rows of parsnip & three rows of turnip seeds straight into the ground on my plot.

Will this spell of heavy rain harm the seeds in any way or will they happily ride out the storm? Fortunately my plot drains very well but I am still concerned.

We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Rain is not usually a problem, it's when it turns cold with it that they are not too happy.

Fingers crossed, but only time will tell ::)

If your plot drains well I wouldn't worry but it's the cold snap forecast that might bother them as far as germinating. I don't think it's going to last long though to affect them so maybe some fleece / polytunnel covering just in case?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

persistent rain itself wont harm them - waterlogging due to poor drainage will do so, in time.
I would confidently say that you will ok for a few weeks yet.

If the hard frosts do come then that is a different matter.....
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

The traditional time for sowing parsnips direct is February, so don`t worry about it. Just remember that parsnips are slow to germinate, up to 14 days or so. :D
