Another radish question.
« on: March 29, 2010, 14:57 »
Trying radishes for the first time, planted in a large trough on g/house shelf.
The variety is "Albena" - a white radish, seeds free from Gardening Which.
They are now about 2 inches tall, two larger outer leaves and a couple of smaller leaves just starting in the centre.
My query is - should they be long and spindly? I thought they grew mostly underground with just the leaves above ground, or I am going crackers?
Should I transplant them deeper into the compost? Although I'm sure I read that radishes do not cope well with transplanting.
Seems a lot of fuss over a few radishes but I'd like to try something different that I've never done before.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

too warm?  I dont think they need much heat or protection, maybe just a cloche.

Re transplanting, I re-sowed my thinnings last year when they were very young to great effect.

I'm feeling reckless and brave today so I'll say that although radish is one of the fastest seeds to germinate it's not always the easiest crop to get the perfect result from.

Apart from flea beetle and slugs, the main problem I've had is the one you have got; all spindly stem and no "bulb".

I think the answer is to sow them more deeply (don't go mad, about half an inch rather than just a sprinkling of soil on top).

Whether they will take kindly to transplanting I don't know; Kermit thinks it might work although maybe yours are a bit too big for that?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks to you both.
I'll try a replant tomorrow, if that doesnt work - well it's only my time I've lost, and I don't think I'll bother again, after all they are not exactly expensive from the shops.

Albena should be fine indoors.

I suspect that they are at that stage of growth where their root hasn't started to swell yet so they look skinny.

Don't worry and don't scrap them they should be fine imho  :D

My sparklers look similar and I knnow they will be OK

I sowed mine direct on the plot 3 weeks ago and they came up about 7 days ago. Ive done the first thinning and the root already looks thick (and tasted GREAT!). ;)
