Spuds in Sacks
« on: March 27, 2010, 16:07 »
Normally I plant spuds in bags about 2/3rds of the way down - 3 a bag - and cover to a depth of about 2 inches - then top them up as they grow, covering the leaves every time until they reach the top.

Would it make any difference if I just covered them up all the way to the top of the bag from the word go do you think? (They are all first earlies)  Thanks for looking!
For the latest on the BIG project, read my blog.

I am doing spuds in bags for the first time this yr, have grown them in the ground before but had blight quite bad for last 2 yrs. so going to do them at home rather than at allotment. I have ordered 2 spud patio kits with my tesco tokens. I would like any tips please.

i grow mine on my veg patch and earth up straight away and get good results.i think the principle would be the same with bags.

i  top mine up as they grow and it works ok so i would be reluctant to change , if you top up to half way and put your spud in and then fill when it shows through that might be better
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

I use a ridging tool on my rotavator and a bulb planter, so its easiest thing to do is shovel some well rotted manure into the trench then rake the soil back into a ridge, job done, no more messing and protected from frost for a month or so.

The title is 'spuds in sacks'.........I suspect that your method of using a ridging tool would do a bit of damage to the sacks don't you ::)
