Sainsburys Roasting Joints.
« on: March 24, 2010, 17:19 »
Had a couple of beef roasting joints today as they were on special offer (50% off) roughly £4 / kg.

Far cheaper than any other meat I could find, they appear to be decent cuts of silverside. I've cut them down into 2 good sized roasting joints and 10 x 1" thick steaks, to either braze as is or cube for curry. Im well pleased.  :D

Probably not.  - and theres not a lot of room to wander about in my freezer either.
Locally grown???   :D :D
Definitely not. More air miles than I've done in the last 30 years.

I was reading an interesting article the other day on breeding rabbits for food though..  ::)

Unfortunally not all of us can afford free range or locally grown.

Sometimes locally grown is not so expensive. Our nearest local supplier of beef is 2 mins away. Our nearest supermarket 13 miles away. We buy from the local supplier in bulk for the freezer. Last order, Topside, minced beef, shin beef and skirt for stews,  all Hereford beef oh and and diced lamb. Cost £50 - split into meal size portions it made 13 meals so less than £4 a meal. And believe me the beef is superb, not tried the lamb yet.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

I  use the sainsbury free recipe cards that feed four for a fiver, meat, veg, everything included, they usually have them near the door so you can decide what you need to buy for the recipes.  Your local meat sounds nice but I would have to serve smaller portions or stretch it out with lentils, beans, etc. :D

We only have the meat about once a week and I tend to make a stew do 2 days. The first day we have most of the meat with potatoes and then the second day I add rice or bulgar wheat to the left over gravy and veg to make a risottoy type dish. I know it sounds as if we eat well but when you have to go atleast 13 miles to the shops we do tend to eat frugally it is just that the meat farm is nearer than most shops so we use less fuel.

Unfortunally not all of us can afford free range or locally grown.

Im afraid my wallet has no ethics either - Organic / local meat is well out of my budget, as is much of the supermarket meat.  I refuse to buy processed "meat" or anything else that tastes like rubber.

If the choice is between Jacket spud and beans or Jacket spud, beans and a chunk of morally questionable steak,  Im afraid Ermintrude is going to lose out every time.

I also had 2 of the whole legs of lamb, 1 I have frozen whole to roast the other I removed the meat and cut into 4 potions (2 meals each) and the leg bone went in the stew pot last night.

The Gammon Joint (2.6Kg) I have cut into 3, which makes each joint (800g) 3gbp , from each I will get 3 dinners (mash, gammon, peas and parsley sauce) 2 days of Ham and Mustard sandwiches for lunch and 1 cheese and Ham omelet when it gets too thin to slice.

Which I make in total 18 "meals" or 50p a serving - far better for my wallet.

Oh - In total I bought 2 Beef joints, 2 Legs of Lamb , 1 Pork Joint and 1 Gammon Joint. It was 14.5Kgs of meat and cost ~ 60gbp.

Did you know that New Zealand lamb has a smaller carbon footprint (all things taken into consideration) than home produced lamb ?

Surprising eh  ;)
