easier (maybe lazier) seed sowing
« on: March 23, 2010, 22:15 »
At this time of year it can be a struggle to get a good fine seedbed as it isn't drying out as fast as we would like it but it would be nice to get some seeds in now to avoid a rush latter on.
So last year I came up with a cunning plan.I cultivated the soil as well as I could but itwas still a bit lumpy so I covered the seeds with john Innes no2 compost and it worked a treat. You have to water well after sowing as the no2 is so fine but after one good soaking you don't have to worry about it.
It also had the great advantage of being a slightly diffrent colour to my soil so you could be 100% sure that anything not growing out of the john innes was a weed. You can make no2 yourself but I can't lay my hands on the recipe now(I'm sure someone has it).
It's great for fine seed as you can be much more precise as to how much soil/compost you cover the seed with.

Is this the one?

 John Innes Potting Compost

JI #1 Base

    7 parts sterilized loam
    3 parts peat
    2 parts sand or grit
    Fertilizer: 4 oz / 8 gallons (3 grams / liter)
    Lime or chalk: 3/4 oz / 8 gallons ( 0.5 grams / liter)

JI #2 Base: Same as 1 but double the Fertilizer and chalk

JI #3 Base: Same as 1 but triple the Fertilizer and chalk

sion01 - quite agree, I've used this to great effect in the past in the year that I first cultivated my land. The costs do add up mind you and three years down the line, after a good hard winter, I've got a lovely tilth so am really glad to save the money on bags of JI.
