stringy seedlings
« on: March 21, 2010, 21:00 »
hi, i have been strugling to get my seeds to germinate so was speaking to one of the old guys on my site and he sugested i put them in the airing cupboard to germinate and then move them to the window sill as they start to come through. so i sowed some toms on tuesday and checked them everyday and nothing had happened until yesterday when i forgot to check on them i looked this morning and they were all about 3-4 inch tall and white and stringy abit like bean sprouts. i couldnt believe how quick they grew. what i want to know is can these be saved or should i buy more seeds to start again and chalk this one up to experience.

they are white due to the lack of chlorophyll and leggy as they have been searching for light.

my advice would be to sow some more and leave these in the light to change colour.

If nothing else you will learn about phototropism and a bit about photsynthesis....
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

I'd do both (space allowing).

I'd leave um to grow their first set of leaves then bury them up to their arm pits when you pot them up.They'll root from the buried stem like a cutting and do just fine.

thanks for the advise i think i will leave them on the window sill but will sow some more aswell ive ot the room and dont feel confident about them recovering because they dont even have the stength to hold themselves up at the moment. i will follow the advise though and if they do recover they can be an aditional bonus crop.
