Help with planting a wild hedge please
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:18 »
Having taken out a lot of dead wood and brambles ,I would like to replant the very long hedge that borders our land.So I am looking for cheap but good stockists of young hedgerow shrubs/trees.
And any ideas about  stopping Rabbits  stripping the bark off the newly planted hedge , I suspect I am going to have to put up some temporary fencing till it is established .
Ideas of which plants to choose. Thinking of Hazel,Hawthorn and Beech so far.

Blackthorn, wild roses, maybe a crab apple, field maple.

However it depends on your soil.  Have a look at other hedges in your neighbourhood.

Plastic rabbit guards or tubes are needed to prevent rabbit damage.

Hi Corndolly, We are currently looking into planting a native hedge. The best company we found is called Glebe hedging.   www.hedge-plants.co.uk  There are others on Ebay but these had the best mix of plants. Hope that helps

We have used Hopes Groves Nurseries a few times -- good price and reliable.

Here is some of their information, which might be useful as they suggest different trees/shrubs for different positions.  :D

Thanks to you all for replies ,if I am going to put protectors on the young saplings thats an awful lot. I'll look for supplier of those too. What spacing between plants by the way.
I'm guessing at 3' or 1 metre in new money!
I like the crab apple and rose idea ,there are already some that are established .
