Do cauliflowers sprout flowers?
« on: March 21, 2010, 09:03 »
Hi,

A friend of mine contacted me with a query and I wonder if you can help. She said she was growing a cauliflower and the head shrivelled and died; then another grew, shrivelled and died; and from it grew a stalk which has white flowers on it.

I first thought this might be what happens to cauliflowers when you leave them for too long; but then I had the crazy idea she might have mistaken it for broccoli. As you can see, I have no real idea so I thought I would ask you. Below is a picture of the mystery veg. modelled by my aforementioned friend.

Thank you,

Richard

It looks like it has gone to seed.  All veg (I think!) will eventually set seed, it is their main aim in life - to reproduce!

Elcie is right...it has 'bolted' or gone to seed. The aim (obviously) is not to let them do this!

It can be avoided  more by not stressing them out - try not to disturb the rootball when transplanting, make sure the ground is well firmed down, keep them watered as they need it.

My first guess was correct then! That's made my day. :) Thanks your your help; I shall pass it on to my friend.

(Some of these veggies look lovely when they go to seed; shame to have to eat them!)
