still time for a trench for runner beans ?
« on: March 21, 2010, 07:32 »
is it too late to start a trench mainly for runner beans i have plenty of shredded newspaer and grass cuttings to hand plus all the usual kitchen peelings,
or i have some homemade compost which i could just add the newspaper to help retain the moisture in the ground and ideas on what to do for the best
thanks

well I'm still chucking things in the "trench" at the moment, but I'll be covering it with manure and soil in the next couple of weeks to let it compost down until I'm ready to plant out end of May.  With milder weather & warming temperatures it should compost quite quickly and throughout the rest of the growing season.  It's probably getting a bit late to start a new trench but I see no reason why you can't put some stuff down now  :)
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

I think you will be ok, i would leave the kitchen peelings out, and just stick with the shredded paper and grass cuttings. That way you should get a lot of moisture retention, which beans love.

I just put a large plastic plantpot in the middle of a 5-plant wigwam and water into that, filling to the brim. Only trenched one year but didn't see the point after that.
