Clearing Out The Hen House
« on: March 19, 2010, 17:24 »
A slightly lighter one than my previous post - last weekend my chooks decided to do a little spring cleaning.  They emptied all of the bedding out of their hen house and spread it about in the run.

Then they went off in the garden, scratched around, the usual.  Being a mug I went out and packed it all back in, only for them to do it again.

I figured they were trying to tell me 'spring is here, we don't need so much warmth' or something, so have taken the hint and they now have less bedding than before.

The weird thing is - when I went to the garden centre, the hens they have there were  doing the same thing - shuffling everything out.

So - anyone else out there witnessed the same behaviour?  Is it just that spring is here or were they too hot?  I'm intrigued...

That's interesting - mine haven't been doing this, but they have been sleeping apart - when it was cold they all really huddled together.
They have also been making a right mess of their wood chippings in the run - tossing it about everywhere, which they've never done before...wonder if it's linked?

My broody silkie has been doing it.  Maybe they all do it, but the ones that don't go the whole hog and actually sit, get bored with making the nest sort of thing, just clear off half way through and carry on as normal after they have had a go at playing house, sort of thing?  Funny though.  the daft old birds!!! x
