Can you grow lettuce in a pot.
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:25 »
I've sown some lettuce seeds which have grown into seedlings.......... and now need to transfer them to the garden but before I do I was wondering would I instead be able to plant and grow them in pots. If the answer is yes then how deep should I plant them and how far apart (them same question applies for the garden too).  :(

yes you can plant them in pots and they should grow very well, if you read the back of the packet it should give the spacing, however if you are limited for space have a good look at this link    http://www.squarefootgardening.com/

when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

yes as digalotty you can, but what type are they? Different types require different spacing etc.

I've made wooden boxes 2'x1'x4" and grow my early salads in them - just had some for lunch on a bacon butty.

I grew Winter Density in pots over the winter in a cold frame. They're delicious. I guess the bigger the lettuce, the bigger the pot. Perhaps you could try Little Gem for starters and see how you get on.

The proofs in the pudding or pot.  I do pick individual leaves as I need them.  Mostly Gems and cos type lettuce's.  Ah I notice they are icebergs, if the mini green ones (s'posed to be tennis ball size but mine were bit bigger than that) from T&M I put four in the same size box as picture.  The box is what Tesco chuck away, their mushrooms boxes come in these.  I find them in those cagesthey chuck their rubbish in along the isles.  They are approx: 17" by 10".

I grew them in Wickes plastic oblong planter troughs 15" long, two to a planter, they went like wotsit  off a shovel. Being in a limited amount of compost they needed watering regularly.

Well over the next week I am having the garden prepared and a new greenhouse installed, so I'll be making good use of my pots in the meantime. I'm really looking forward to beginning this fruit and veg. It's cheaper, healthier, enviromentally friendly and fun for me and my daughter to work on............. it doesn't get any better.

This is my ploy for today.
I've got a load of broken pallets from work. boxes will be made, lined with plastic and filled up. All my salad stuff, barring greenhouse toms, and herbs will be grown in these,

I did not think that a lettuce could even grow in something as small as a celebrations tin. Surely that's too small. If not then the amount of tins I could have put to good use instead of throwing it away.  :nowink:
