Date stamping eggs
« on: March 19, 2010, 09:10 »
Hi all,
Can anyone please tell me where we can get a date stamper for our eggs.
We are not sure if there is a special one to buy or will any do.

Started laying at last, :D getting 2 a day at the mo, but we need to keep check on rotation.
We live in Lincolnshire.
Thanks,
Stay lucky

we just use a large tray and make sure we use them left to right and keep moving them along if you see what i mean :)If we have a full tray on a friday i just give a load to friends /family etc that way i can always say the eggs are no more than a week old :)

I just pencil the date on mine. I did do it the same way as lisa but then found the kids were just picking all the biggest ones, regardless of the order they were in  ::)

I was given an Egg Skelter for Christmas and you put the eggs from the bottom upward so that the ones at the bottom are the oldest.
http://www.egg-skelter.co.uk/  You can get them in different colours and if you google egg skelter you can get them elsewhere including the omlet website.  I think they are great if you only have a few hens.  They're quite a novel way of storing eggs. :)

Or if you do not have room on the worktop for a skelter make an egg slope. It`s just a piece of batten with a strip of thin ply each side and a soft stop at the bottom to prevent the eggs rolling off. Easy peasy. :)

Ebay or staples ;)

Sorry but I read your reply and am giggling to myself as I have visions of the date being stapled to the egg. It did take me a second to realise you meant the shop. I can't help it honest :D :D :D

Hi all,  I have two silkies- not long ago started laying...I am also getting the eggs muddled up - I found this site: http://www.ascott.biz/acatalog/Egg_Boxes__Trays_and_Marking_Systems.html

for the ink, stamp and pad it will cost about £20 in total...however, I just called a local farm- that sell fresh eggs, they have so many chickens laying- they have an electronic machine to imprint the date- but they suggested I use a pencil- here is the problem tho-
a normal pencil contains lead! that is highly toxic im afraid...so- how about kiddies coloured pencils? the non toxic variety.
or
you can actually buy the date stamp from w h smiths, and a pad- and just lay out for the food grade ink at £10 per bottle.

Pencils do not contain lead they contain graphite.  The "lead" referred to is what the Romans used to use for marking things and the term stuck.

So ditch the costly markers, there is no lead in anyones pencil these days. ;)
