Pumpkin seedlings
« on: March 18, 2010, 20:27 »
I know I've probably done them too early but what's done is done :D

I'm repotting my pumpkin seedlings however I assume they have gone what you call "leggy" so much so I need to put a skewer with it to support it so my question is should I keep it and see what happens or put it down to lesson learnt and sow another?

Its been in a propogator along with some Toms and courgette all of which look normal and Aubergine which are yet to show their head all planted 6th Mar

TIA
Missy

The trouble is that pumpkins grow very quickly, much faster than toms, and you will not be able to plant out in the open until the beginning of May at the earliest  It could be 6ft long by then
I would suggest you bin it and don't start another off untill the end of April  :)

Thanks for such a quick response I will bin it save the compost which I would have used re-potting it and learn my lesson!

Hopefully all lessons learn will be that cheap

Thanks again

I don't plant mine out until 1st June. We haven't had a frost in May for several years, but I think Squash / Courgettes / outdoor Cucumbers hate the cold, and it knocks them right back, so they are the one thing I delay. I do pot them on into fairly large pots (5"-ish) so I can get them as big as possible before they go out (and I can hold them back a bit longer if the weather takes a nose-dive).

I start mine one-month before last-frost (which is around 01-Jun in these parts, although we haven't had one that late for years) which would mean sowing them:
