Soiless Plants?
« on: March 18, 2010, 16:35 »
Does anyone know what to do with a plant that has no soil? I was given one as a present and it had instructions but after spraying it with water three times a week and sporadically with a little plant fertilizer, it has started to go brown! Has anyone managed to grow one successfully? Any tips would be great?

The only plants I know which can grow without soil are orchids. Is it an orchid then? With orchids it is important to know the name, as there is a great variety in growing requirements.

Sorry I'm at work at the moment so I don't have the label in front of me. It is an orchid though, if that helps somewhat. I'll have a look when I get back. I was told plants without soil, take minimal care, is this not the case?

If it`s an orchid, then, no, it doesn`t need minimal care. It needs special care.

Could it be an Air Plant? (a picture might help!)

Have a look at this link.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Mmm the instructions were a bit misleading then! ??? I'm not sure of the name, the only name I have on the instructions is 'vesutor' but I think that's a company name. It is an air plant if that helps and the petals are white with a cerise pink centre.

Vesutor are specialists in bromeliads which is therefore probably what yours is; suggest you "Google" bromeliads for care instructions which should help you out even if you don't know which particular species you have.

I think your plant is a Tillandsia. In the internet you can find a lot of information about this plant. Tillandsias don`t like limy water, so always spray with rain water.

There are quite a lot of air plants, some of which have grey leaves, some like green.

It might be that you have over fed it and scorched the leaves as they need very little except a light spray from time to time and the very occasional, very dilute feed. Not chalky water as Puenktchen said. Cooled boiled water is OK if you have no rainwater.
