... anybody know if I can grow this from seed or do I buy plants or could I root a bit from the local thai food market??

Only if there are roots attached.

You can propagate by division of the clump if you can get one plant going.

... local thai food market ... but the chillies and stuff in there aren't all in shrink wrap plastic and stuff, so I think if I'm going to get it with a bit of root on that's my best bet!

I've succesfully managed to root some gooseberry cuttings (against the best advice from all the books - because I didn't bother to read the books before I took the cuttings!) and I've managed to root the bit of the new vine that my other half beheaded.  So I'm clearly on good form in the rooting department!

Wellies, I grew some from seed last year, and it was quite good - got killed by the winter though, as I didn't have a gh then.
