I buy compost according to the size of the bag and the weight.... price too, of course.

It has to fit in my cycle trailer, be not too soaked as it adds to the weight, and be from somewhere that has not too many hills between them and home.

All very scientifically simple - like me  ;)

Yukk. If you've still got your receipt, take back the compost and the slugs and demand a better replacement. Stores insist they stand by their name, so make them prove it.

I usually just use whatever is on offer from the garden centre I can walk to in five minuets.
Sometimes it's this brand, sometimes it's that,
Can't say I can really be bothered to treat it as a science.
I haven't starved to death over the results yet. ;)

yes but fair do's, baby slugs are less than 1mm long when born, and it was probably smaller than that when the bag was made.  I dont know of a single way you could screen a 1mm slug out of a compost stream on a compost production line. Its not like you can suck it out with a magnet or pass it through a screen.

Just finished using 2 bags of ASDA cheap stuff. Been okay for my purposes (only to grow sunflowers in for my kids), but would really use it for anything else, as it's full of lumps of clay, and what looks like root fibre. Sunflowers seems to be doing okay though, much to kids delight...
So much to grow, so little room....

if it has root fibre in then its either all green waste OR its got top layer peat in that uncomposted, either way its been made on the cheap

In a rush and wife bought a bag of the ASDA stuff. Bag says it is Sphagnum peat with added nutrients. Light as a feather but looks as if it holds water o.k. Only using for seed sowing, I don't think it would be much use for any thing else.
