What cabbage?
« on: March 12, 2010, 21:16 »
Hi

I am new here and we are in the process of getting an allotment (waiting for paperwork to be confirmed). But i am getting confused about cabbages. lol. I want to be able to grow the white cabbages that you get in the supermarket. We go through one per week for making home-made coleslaw, but i can't find 'white cabbage' seeds.

Do the exist and if so, what are they really called? or if they don't, is there anything similar that will work in coleslaws? Are Primas or Primo? i cant remember which it is now) similar? See, told you i was a newbie! lol

Any help would be appreciated.

Sweetheart cabbage makes a lovely coleslaw. Although it's green it's nutty and sweet.
Can't help with the varieties of white, sorry!

white cabbage/coleslaw is a traditional winter salad where lettuce is the summer one :)

we're the ones who try to have everything out of season

You can't beat Minocole for a Dutch type late Summer/Autumn and even into Winter cabbage.

They'll grow to about 5-6 pounds if you leave them to get that big but the best thing is that they don't split if you do grow them that big. :D
