pickled onions from sets?
« on: March 10, 2010, 12:40 »
I realised last night after sorting thru my onions that I went a bit mad in Wilkos in Feb, and bought 4 bags of onions for planting thinking there was about 100 in each. I only wanted about 300 or so to plant but after counting a bag, even after getting rid of soft ones, I think I have nearly twice what I need. I may be able to pass them on but most people on the site already seem to have theirs and many seem to have bought more than me.

So is it possible to plant the extras very close together with the aim of growing very small onions which I could use to pickle? The sets are Sturon, do they need to be a particular type to pickle or is it just the size that is important. How close should I plant or should I harvest them early to ensure they are the right size.

As you can guess I have never pickled onions before so am pretty clueless!

That should be fine. It's what I did last year. This year I'm growing shallots to pickle.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Can also take onions earlier so smaller for pickling and take earlier and use direct in kitchen, green shoots and all in salads, stir fries and in cooking
Sturon is a good keeper if grown correctly and stored correctly so should be still useable as late as April/May the year after.
