Cleaning the coop and drinkers/feeders
« on: March 08, 2010, 13:44 »
Am I able to use Jeyes Fluid to clean my chicken haouse and feeders/drinkers etc. I ask this because I already use it for the rabbits and it seems silly buying another product if I don't have to. Also, how often would I need to do it?

Thanks. Do you use it for the feeding equipment as well? I use it for the wild bird feed stations, so I don't see any reason not to, but I want to be sure. I don't want to poison them  :(

Jeyes fluid (a high pH disinfectant) contains phenols and will cause problems if injested, so thorough rinsing of bowls etc is needed. Because it is caustic it should not be in contact with skin. The coop will be fine with this and it has the advantage of being stable, but do you actually need it for routine cleansing and disinfection? Bleach is cheap, high pH and degrades to common salt.

Be aware using Jeyes if you have cats around as it is poisonous to them ::) ::)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I just use washing up liquid for my feeders and drinkers. A soak in hot soapy water, a good scrub, then rinse and dry. Simples  :D
Cheaper than Jeyes etc, too.
Tip of the day - if you don't let them get too dirty, they don't take long to clean  ::)
