Can you point me in the direction of the chitting advice, as I've held off planting my spuds as they've hardly chitted at all in my greenhouse, they were inside the house for 2/3 weeks, and in the greenhouse for a week or two and they've barely produced any sprouts, do you think it's too cold out there?
Ta, Jo

If you click on search, above, just under the page title and enter chitting potatoes you will find lots of info and topics ...........loads in there, should cover any/every question you may have :)

I've had black membrane on the potato bed for the last fortnight.  I put my FE Swift in last weekend and today in the pouring rain I put in SE Anya and covered them up again with the membrane! Trying to be safe than sorry.

Second earlies went in today - earlier than last year.
Expected to be much later with such a cold winter but things seem to be catching up - apple has flower buds on it (shocker)
Vivaldi and Lady Balfour now in - hope they'll be OK

I was going to put my first spuds in yesterday but the weather turned cold so i'll definately plant them over easter.
My local B & Q has seed potatoes at two bags for £6.00 and then half price so £3.00. They all have long white sprouts in the bags , is it worth buying any, they seem to mostly King Edwards.
Hurray finally retired
two plots now 31A and 35A

Mine have gone in this weekend as I am away over Easter.

I’m not planning on putting down additional protection (at the moment) based on the 5 day forecast for lots of rain and min night temps of 1’C, especially as they won’t (I assume) poke their heads out for at least a week.

Should I be looking at protection? At what point (min night temps) should I consider it?

Cheers!

You can earth them up a few times as the leaves poke through, this usually takes you past the worst of the frosts. When I want to stop earthing up, I just use the frost forecaster on metcheck and put fleece/polysheet over when a frost is actually forecast :)

my 3rd and final row of Rocket went in this weekend, plus the first row of my second early.

I'm away for easter weekend but another two rows of seconds will go in when we get back, then eight rows of main crop, 4 whites and 4 reds will follow in short order.
I hoe, I hoe, it's off to weed I go.
