I planted Rocket this weekend - the soil was surprisingly warmer than I expected so I'm very hopeful it was the right decision  :)

I too planted my chitted Rockets this weekend, despite the great and good of our allotments all saying I was too early. The soil has been covered and as paintedlady says, was surprisingly warm.

I decided against planting the second earlies, I'll leave them another 10 days maybe, then get the mains in the weekend after easter, weather permitting.

I would love to leave all my spuds until I could be absolutely sure, but with my back that is not an option. A couple of rows at a time is better than a month in traction.
I hoe, I hoe, it's off to weed I go.

I was going to plant all mine at Easter, mainly due to having the time over the easter holidays, but also because easter being later this year it would hopefully be warm enough. I've just seen the bbc forecast

"While temperatures should be near normal at first, there are signs that it will turn cooler as we head in to the Easter weekend, meaning that showers could start to turn to snow over hills and frost becomes more likely across northern Britain."

So now I'm wondering whether to either wait to plant them all later on in April -which seems quite late in the year ? Or conversely get on with planting the first and second earlies sooner, either today or this weekend, in the hope that under the earth ( in raised beds in my garden) they will be ok if there is a frost. I assume they are only vulnerable to frost when they emerge from the soil

Providing they have been planted deep enough and the frost does not penetrate the soil too much, most damage is usually to the leaves.  As we can expect frosts from now until end of May-ish, always handy to have some fleece ready for a quick cover up on those nights it is forecast  ;)

I've just seen the bbc forecast

typical holiday weather:

Outside so far it's only the row of early potatoes in, and 2 rows of SugarAnne peas under fleece just till they show, oh and a few garlic.

The 2nd earlies, Kestrel and Charlotte will go in later this week if I can get out there  :)

In the greenhouse there's a tray of leeks still to show, and half a dozen cabbages to transplant, a few small pots of lettuce at various stages, rocket and spring onions. Everything is happening at once this year  I just wish the weather would make up its mind!
Indoor window sills are full of the usual stuff ::)

Mumofstig, sounds like you are doing well :)
I have some peas in plug pots in the greenhouse that are a couple of centimetres tall, I think I may harden them off and get them on the plot. Weather says a could few nights though.
Can you point me in the direction of the chitting advice, as I've held off planting my spuds as they've hardly chitted at all in my greenhouse, they were inside the house for 2/3 weeks, and in the greenhouse for a week or two and they've barely produced any sprouts, do you think it's too cold out there?
Ta, Jo
