finding comfrey in the wild
« on: March 08, 2010, 11:13 »
Has anybody tried it.
I read articles about comfreys grow on stream/brook/river banks. I just want to ramble along one and collect enough (well sort of ) for couple of goes.
have you done this?
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Aside from the legal implications of uprooting a plant from the wild, you'll probably dig up something that will self seed all over the place. Buy or beg a named, sterile strain.

Hi

As long as you are not uprooting the plant (which is also quite difficult as they have very strong and thick tap roots), collecting leaves is I think not a problem (only at the moment you will have no luck, there are hardly any leaves out yet). I found them on loamy (or clayey) ground on river banks or on or near pastures which moist and rich soil. I have also seen them in fens. But they are not everywhere. You have to search for the plants. But once you found a location, they are normaly quite abundant.

There is a good supply on comfrey plants which I collect while walking my dogs.  Whip off some leaves, stuff them in a dog poo bag (unused) and put them in my water butt & compost heap.

Mis-understood 'collect enough' - thought 'dig-up collect' rather than 'pick-leaves collect'.
