It depends on why you are doing it. If you look on it as a hobby and you have a passion for growing things, then it's a case of how much you want to spend. If on the other hand you just want to grow vegetables with a minimal outlay, it can be very cost effictive. I think it's a matter of personal choice realy.

Good answer there lacewing.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

True! :D
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Could be if you so chose.

Choice is yours when it comes to allotments.

DD's post therein is the answer for me

It will save me money in the long run.  It's my choice if/what I choose to spend money on for my allotment.  Id like a nice shed with a woodburner, so thats going to cost me. On the other hand, I could always take a flask and sit in the car when its really cold.

Its our little piece of heaven where choice rules - whether its money, weedkillers, what to grow and many many more.

I always get on my soapbox about this question, sorry!

You wait that long?!!

My neighbours are retired Grammar School teachers and get a fair bit of fruit and veg off me.  They are not short of a bob or two, but one thing that has always stuck with me was when he said.............Welsh accent required here..

"You know, I always tell my friends about you. You're actually doing what they've always wanted to do".

Bottom line for me.

There's a lot about GYO you cannot cost.

If you insist on doing so..... it's not for you.

I would have to agree with DD.

I doubt I save any money on growing veg or just gardening in general.

I spend a lot on seeds,compost, pots , trays, tools,plants e.t.c

But for me there's nothing nicer in the evening or weekend for a few hours just sowing seed or soil prep and planting or potting on.

I don't think you can put a price on the enjoyment you get from it and it's a hobby and the benefits of it are nice tasty veg and the satisfaction that you have grown something yourself is far greater than price,

Eh, it's cheaper than the gym.  But as for saving money on veg alone, probably not.  This is my second full year, and it's probably going to be cheaper than the first year as I have most of the tools and seeds I need.

Hi
for me the answer has to be a resounding YES (sorry for shouting ), 4 years ago I started to keep parrots and it soon became apparent to me that in order to keep them at the peak of health I would need to buy expensive (over-priced) imported fruit and veg so decided to have a go at growing my own, I can honestly say that I spend very little in the way of seeds etc as I save my own whenever possible, I also live next to the sea (just open the front door) so have a year round supply of seaweed as fertiliser and am lucky enough to have farmer friends with ready supplies of manure and  leaf mulch.
To begin with I'll admit I had to part with cash to make my garden viable (windproof) but after the initial outlay I can honestly say that for the last 3 years I haven't  bought anything other than fresh parsnip seed each year.
There are only 2 of us in our household (+ the parrots) and we are self sufficient in pretty much everything, however I used the last of the leeks today so must remember to plant more this year!!
