Zap it with Round Up before the asapragus shows.
nonsense, who needs weed killers. This plant{don,t like the word weed]is removed very easily with a hoe.

Craggy - as Richy said, there is more to a plant than what you can see above ground. Your first answer in this thread was to say that you didn't know what it was, now you're an expert, it seems.

Also it is VERY rude to use replies such as "nonsense". A simple "I'd like to disagree" may be a bit more typing, but is far more polite.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Im convinced its a member of the Willowherb family, could be Broad leaf Willowherb

The only other things it even remotely looks like are Orache:

and Purple Loosestrife

I think you're right about some sort of Willowherb, I don't suppose it matters at the end of the day which one it is!

It's a weed - as it's a plant growing where you don't want it to.

Got to agree with DD this weed is from Onagraceae Epilobium. Better know as Willowherb there are around 200 species of this plant (weed). It spreads by seed or like couch grass via creeping roots. Useing a hoe may multiply the problem if it is of the creeping type.

I agree that Round Up seems a bit extreme.

Oh and DD "now you're an expert, it seems." seems to me to be certainly as rude as using the word "nonsense".

IHO

Thanks neal.

Let's stop messing about. Lesley has only just started out.

Have it out and get rid. Off site or burn it if you're allowed. We'll worry about composting perennials later.

Words are not rude,only context.

Then use more polite ones
"I think the carrot infinitely more fascinating than the geranium. The carrot has mystery. Flowers are essentially tarts. Prostitutes for the bees. There is, you'll agree, a certain je ne sais quoi oh so very special about a firm young carrot" Withnail and I

well i have had this weed at home for few years,, hoeing does,nt seem to work just spreads it, have tried weedkiller in the more open areas and its still there,

i,ve resigned myself to just pulling it up when it appears,, it does seem to be getting less now.. but you do need to keep on top of it.

I have to admit that, as a soft tissue plant, I have always dug it in. With no apparent adverse results. :D

I'd go with Rosebay Willowherb.

I've had loads of it on my plot as the previous tennants left a 5x50ft path to overgrow with nettles, brambles and willowherb.

Brambles and nettles go on the bonfire but the willowherb goes in the compost. I've never had any of it regrow in there and its only a problem if you let it seed.

Compost should never stay still long enough for anything to grow, let alone flower and seed.
