Too many eggs
« on: March 04, 2010, 20:24 »
Is there a way of slowing down chickens laying.?  I currently only have 3 chickens but they lay an egg a day each and it's just too many. I gather that they have a finite amount of eggs so so it's looking like I'll have too many for their young lives and none as they get older! I sell the surplus so they aren't wasted but would prefer fewer for longer. Thanks in advance.

Just give some of the eggs away, or sell them! Not sure you can slow them down once they start.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

I dont think so unless you want to starve or stress them!!!

Enjoy the eggs now!!! Get new hens when they slow down and let the older enjoy their retirement. :D :D :D :D

:) Make the most of it while they are laying. If any of the hens go broody production may slow down or stop.
If all three go broody at once you may end up with no eggs.

If you have eggs you cannot sell pickle some . I had a couple of pickled eggs yesterday that must be 12months old and they were lovely.

8doubles, yeah have lots of pickled eggs and they are so creamy compared to shop bought. Bit stupid to moan about too many I guess. am as self sufficient as I can be and nothing can beat a breakfast of our girls eggs scrambled on our own bread spread with my own home made butter. sets you up for a days digging . Will sleep well tonight!

Freeze some for future use? Either beat the whole egg and freeze in twos or threes, whichever you are most likely to use, or separate, and freeze separately (you'll need to put a pinch of salt in the yolks or they could go rubbery).
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Sell them! you are right, they dont have an endless supply of eggs, but you need to reduce their food intake dramaticly or put them in the dark....it should only be done if their health is at risk from laying eggs, i.e if she has suffered a prolapse. To purposely reduce the egg supply in a healthy hen will cause stress ;)

Eggs over a week old peel more cleanly than fresh, some use white vinegar for pickled eggs but i prefer spiced malt vinegar, the brewed stuff .

You could try nailing their nestboxes to the ceiling as chicken find it difficult to lay eggs upside down!

Or just enjoy them,  fresh, pickled or sell the surplus, is the best strategy.
