Broad Bean Problems
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:23 »
I grew some broad beans inside and they got so big I had to plant them out a little earlier than I intended (a few days ago at the beginning of March). Today they look a bit sad and have some black marks on the stems and the leaves. I assume the frost has got to them.

Are they dead or might they recover?

Thanks

Richard

Did you harden them off before planting them out? Indoor grown plants can be a bit 'sappy' and need to be pit outside for increasing amounts of time before the final planting (usually over a couple of weeks depending on the plant.

Having said that Broad beans are fairly tough anyway so should pull through. I would be tempted to cover them in fleece at night for a couple of weeks as a safeguard, leaving it off ONLY if you can guarantee no frosts.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

They're pretty tough but yours might have had a bit of a shock going outside. They didn't really need starting off inside.
But you can sow some more straight into the ground now. They will catch up with the others.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thank you for your swift replies. I didn't acclimatise them, no. I hope they'll pull through. They don't look too bad. Just a bit fed up.
