To lime, and/or then use fish blood bone??
« on: March 02, 2010, 21:00 »

I cleared my new plot, (make that 'a former veg garden, a bit 'overgrown', given to me by an arable farmer friend   :D )
late last year and it was thick and waist high with nettles, (said on this forum means good soil but acidic).

I dug it over, removing the nettles, runners, WHOLE TREES   and stones, but never got the chance to add any compost or manure. (Lived at work, slept at home after doing all that  :(  :tongue2: ),  so i would like to know if it is too late to, or should i / could i lime and then to use fish blood and bone fertilizer 'til i get myself going properly and get some compost heaps built??

Lime for your Brassicas, F,B and B for  peas and beans. BonemeaL for your rootcrops. Manure/chicken manure for your spuds and onions. :D

Thank you DT for the info,

just another question,

is there some kind of soil 'drench' that i can go over with to kill off any unseen bugs and diseases?
just with the land not being touched for nearly 20 years, ish!

No!

Such treatments are either illegal or will do as much harm as good to the soil.

You may well have some undesirable beasties in such neglected soil but they will decline naturally if you look after it!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Furthermore, any such treatment will not be able to distinguish between good and bad insects, bacteria and viruses, and you would end up killing everything and sterilising your soil entirely, not a good plan.

Oh, ok then.

Did I also read on here that when planting brassicas, you should dust the roots to help protect against club root?

My dad used to use armillatox, but he says you can't get/use that anymore.

You can still get Armillatox but it cannot be used on the garden, We`ve just had the best soil drench you can have, free of charge. The coldest winter for almost 30 years.  :D

Umm, never tried it but lime is pretty alkaline, dont know if you would burn the roots by putting neat lime on them..

Make a paste of 50% lime and 50% of the soil you are planting in to. Dip the brassica roots into this mix then plant. :D

If you're planting brassicas, make up a barrow mixture of good compost, fertilizer, sharp sand and a few couples of lime.

Dig planting holes, add the mixture and really firm it in. Plant in and add some crumbled egg shell as they like calcium. Plant up to the first leaf and really, really firm in well. Water and net.
