ripped out the sweet corns. pretty disappointed this year, they didn't grow that well but some grew to a reasonable size. having said that, you can't beat the taste of juicy sweet corn cob cooked in the oven with lightly buttered, lightly salted and red chilli powder  8)

bought some commercial manure from garden centre (3 60 litre bags for £9.99 )and spread that over area to used to grow garlic and white onions. will try to use a technique to see if they grow bigger this year.

next rip out the courgettes and clear the weeds, ready for poo power  to settle over the winter  :D

Hello
well today was the big burn..as yesterday  i had the over grown blackberry bush
remove ..took 2 hours but what a change..

it is land thats never been used, it was a hedge before over grown for years..
so now i,ve started clearing the roots its not to bad as the rain over night did a great
job the ground was quite soft and i,ve done a nice piece..

the only thing is that as it was a hedge its a lot higher then my plot so digging that level will be fun

We've not had a good look at it yet.  While we were cleaning many allotment owners came over to say hello etc.  One fella said "you're very lucky having that well" pointing to what we had assumed were the footings of an old shed that had been covered by a layer of pallets.  I had been throwing all the rotting wood we were finding on top of it!  Anyway about an hour later a woman came and said it was her ex-husband's old plot and they had dug the well some years previously (and that it had been a life-saver - there's no water on these plots).  As it is still covered in lots of wood we have not examined it yet - we are waiting until the whole area is clearer as it really is a mess.  My fella is going to make a proper brick top to it.  The area around it is bricked but is also about 18" lower than the ground....will keep you posted :)

Thanks for telling us more....... I'm fascinated.  I hope it proves useful and fills with water for you.

If that doesn't work you could always advertise it as a "wishing well" and stick a fine-mesh net in the bottom..... you never know!!   ;)

Now that the ground has dried out i managed to get some much needed weeding done, Planted 120 onion sets (the rest i will do tomorrow), cleared the flower border ready for planting, dug the onion bed over ready planting and planted some shrubs in the communal border to brighten the place up  : ;) :)

went to a local horse stable and got some 14 bags of horse manure after 2 rounds. I was surprised at the site. Does the manure generate so much heat that it starts to actually burn like slow burning ending up with charcoal like ash?

I dug into a small section and i got the usual damp muck but i dug further into it and there was dry batch of hay that was smoking and smelled like it was burning? i found that rather unusual.

spread the muck everywhere over the top and think i might need at least 20 bags or more once i have weeded the rest, and thankfully the horse stable is not too far. car is a mess and outside its no cleaner

Took all the runners down today, dug a trench for some autumn sown peas, shredded the bean plants and lined the trench with them, covered in manure, moved the chickens...

A bit of weeding till I got invited for a cuppa and then there was a lot of chatting.  A bit more weeding and cutting back some blackberries and raspberries, then home in the dark.  Amazing how much shorter the days feel already.

There's a good reason for that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
