goose breeding
« on: February 27, 2010, 21:06 »
We have a goose and gander and are looking to raise a small number of goslings.  The gander has been regularly treading the goose who has now started to lay.

From what we have read on the net, we can expect her to lay 15 or so eggs and then to go broody.  We should collect these and then return them once she is broody.

Is this a good plan or might we do better with an incubator?  All words of wisdom from more experienced folk will be welcome.

Hi if you have'nt got an incubator to test the eggs for fertility take the first 6 eggs away and  throw them as there is a chance they wont be fertile, if you keep taking the eggs away you are encouraging her to keep laying, if you are sure he is treading the goose properly - making contact,  then leave the eggs for the goose to look after she will lay a clutch of eggs and then go broody, the eggs will all hatch within hours of each other.

If she is less than 2 years old you may have touble with her staying broody, as normally older birds make better broodies

Do you also have chickens? If one of them goes broody they make excellent surrogate mums for ducklings and goslings  :)
