Growbags in allotments
« on: February 27, 2010, 20:18 »
Hello
Excuse me if I sound ignorant, cos I am. I am wondering if I can use new growbags as compost in a new allotment. I have made raised beds with sleepers and tested the soil which is 6.1.
I am brand new to growing and costed the bags of compost and found the growbags cheapest. Are they suitable? I dont know if they're different to the multi purpose compost

Good evening and welcome to the site. There is very little nutrient in growbags and you would need so many to fill your beds. Also, you need to up your ph level to about 6.5. How deep are your beds? You may be able to fill them with soil by digging out the paths. :D

I've moved your post here where you may get more replies, why don't you pop back to the welcome area and introduce yourself  :)

Grow bag compost is ok to use in your raised beds, but although the individual bags are cheaper there is less compost in them
B & Q and Wickes for example usually do much bigger bags and they're usually on offer with buy three for...... sort of deals....have a good look around :)

I had to top up with Wickes compost last year and found it fine as long as you give the beds some fertiliser after a couple of months. Fish blood and bone, comfrey tea or something like Growmore if you aren't organic.
