Potatoes - varieties mixed up!
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:33 »
Hi all,

Random question - does it matter if my potato varieties are all mixed up? I seperated them out carefully (three different varieties) and had some left over that I needed to fit in somewhere and my husband just chucked them all in together so now I don't know which is which! Does it matter if I plant different varieties in the same pot, as I have no clue now which is which!

Thanks

Were they all early or maincrop or both. If both it might make or difficult to know when to harvest them. Other than that I don't think it matters.  8)

You will have to tell your freinds that you are growing a variety is called 'Lucky Dip'.

If you are chitting them you may be able to seperate them. The earlies will sprout faster. The sprouts may be different colours i.e. purple, green, red

" the earlies will sprout faster"  ???
Is that supposed to be the way things go with potatoes? if so mine are not behaving.
My kestrel have rocketed away producing healthy purple shoots, the desiree are performing just aswell but the belle de fonternay have only got a couple of little pimples on them

I mark mine with a felt tip pen coded such as DRM = Druid main OH has a habit of knocking the trays over in the greenhouse :nowink: how there's plenty of room - it takes time but worth it I reckon.

According to Alan Romans Belle de fontenay isn't a first earl

Belle de Fontenay
This is one of the classic salad potatoes of French cuisine. The tubers are pretty, yellow, smooth, waxy and slightly curved. They can be eaten hot or cold, with or without skin. Flavour improves with storage and is enhanced when cooked with leeks ! “Belles” are often sold as first earlies – they are not.

Both"Taterbase" and the British Potato Council say they are!

I suppose Alan Romans is a higher authority than the BPC.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I hope you meant that tongue in cheek

T & M and Fothergill's all say it's early maincrop or maincrop as well.

What a very simple but very effective idea!  Mine are all in egg trays in the dining room.  I've labelled each tray (I have 8 varieties) but it will only take one errant cat or curious child and they'll be all over the floor.

I'll get my pen!  :D
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

The French,German and UK independant testing authorities all class Belle De Fontenay as an early.
