Rosemary - ooops.
« on: February 22, 2010, 19:06 »
I read so many times how hard rosemary was to germinate from seed so I liberally sprinkled the seeds over a 20 cell tray and stuck it in the back bedroom in a plastic bag.

I check the bag yesterday and I have 30 odd seedlings  :D  ::)

Ive taken the bag off and have them in a sunny spot - anything else I should be doing ? Suggestions on what to do with 30 odd rosemary plants ?

It grows into a shrubby, bushy plant. Garden borders?

Lovely hedge!   The bees will adore you forever!

Or ..... keep sheep?  That is a lot of roast lamb!   :D

Make sure you've got lots of herb-loving friends! If the rosemary likes you it will grow into a big shrub (although it can be tamed.)

It's also very easy to strike a new plant from cuttings so maybe Argyllie's idea for a border is a good idea!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I bought some rosemary in a pot from tescos a couple of years ago. What was left over after the roast, I stuck in the gravel in my front yard for a laugh. Two years later it's a massive shrub requiring regular pruning to keep it under control - at least I don't need to buy it anymore!

I did wonder about that - perhaps a mix of rosemary and lavender to border the chicken run. Does it thicken up ? I've only had single plants before.

English lavender naturally forms itself into a mounded shape, common rosemary (there are other types) forms a spiky bush which can be shaped to some extent (i.e. without killing it!).

Love my herbs but have no idea how high chickens can jump (if that was your thinking behind the question!)  ;)

I'll add my mark to the hedge-brigade. Just imagine running your hand over the top as you walk alongside it.

Lardman, you'll have some great gifts to give away for mother's day, birthdays, etc. Rosemary's main problem is that people want to water it too much. Being a drought tolerant plant that likes only occasional watering, it can't deal with such excess.

BTW - a small handful of rosemary leaves in a muslin bag tossed into the bath is a great muscle relaxant and blood stimulator. You can add some lavender to the mix for a great scent.

I'm glad its not just me who does things like this.

My other problem was planting just a few seeds thinking a bushy plant would grow.  I've bought all these herb seeds and I haven't a clue as to whether I need to be sowing a little or a lot
