Im also gettin confused. On all the packets of seeds I have the only ones that it said to start were onions, broad beans and parsnips although im leaving the snips till later. On here you see people planting so much which is confusing me as im only fairly new to this game.
So I guess what im asking is what should you deffo be starting to plant now.

Many thanks John.

I'm right in the south of the UK. The weather, on the whole, is warmer & milder down here, so if, for example, a seed packet says sow Feb-March, I might get away with sowing in Feb, but as you are further North, you'd be better off waiting another 3-4 weeks, and maybe not planting till March.

That's the simple answer.

Where it gets complicated, is whether or not you or I have a greenhouse, whether or not it's heated, and whether or not you or I like to gamble

What people on this site are sowing (or not) is very interesting to read, but really, you are best off reading the seed packets and looking out of your window.

It's anybody's guess as to whether March & April will be a harsh or mild one.

If you want to risk it, don't mind losses, aren't too worried about the prospect of having to start all over again when you lose everything to another bout of ice & snow, are organised & can be discplined about successional sowing, and have the space to give some kind of protection from the worst of the weather, then go for it. But if you think that lots of dying seedlings might dishearten you and lead towards you giving up, then hold off from sowing till a bit later.

I've sowed my Tomatoes.

The seedlings are growing on the windowsill.  I will pot them on to 3" pots in a while, and then they will be in a little zip-up plastic greenhouse in my cold conservatory. On really cold nights I will carry them into the utility corridor.

I will pot them on to 4.5" around the beginning of April and 9" pots by the end of April ...

... eventually it will be warm enough to plant them in my unheated greenhouse mid to end of May.

By this time they will be about 4' high! ... so this certainly is not a solution for everyone :)

Last year my Sweet Peppers sown on 15 Feb (plastic bag on windowsill) germinated on 08-Mar.

This year sown in [unsophisticated] heated propagator on 14-Feb germinated on 26-Feb (but germination patchy so far, so more to come I think/hope!)

The Toms by comparison germinated in a week or less.
