Hi people. My cuckoo maran lays her eggs off the perch, although she doesn't do it all the time. If she lays during the day then she will use the nesting boxes, if she lays during the night/early morning then we usually find her cracked egg on the floor.

Is there any reason for this??

I had an ex-batt do this for a while ... I put a bundle of straw under the perch which saved the eggs until she reverted to laying in the day in the nest box!

and she might be taken by surprise, is she a young hen by any chance???

one of mine decided that she didn't want to go in the nest box to lay the other day and just squated, laid her egg and then carried on with her digging in the newly turned over ex veg plot. Far too many worms and other interesting goodies that the other girls might get instead of her

Who was it on here once who showed us the photo of the 'hammock' they'd put under the perch where her chicken used to lay whilst sitting there?
