Plotting the sun
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:07 »
I have a 12mx11m plot in the middle of a wide open space and no overhanging buildings and trees. I have worked out Nth,Sth, East, West, and am now planning my plot. Given I have a blank space as it were, which is the best general direction to place my rows and where will the longest shadows fall from the taller plants. Can anyone point me to a useful webiste that calculates this?

Why do you need a website for that?

The sun rises in the east & sets in the west, but at this latitude always remains towards the south. The shadows are longer in the winter when the sun is lower.

So - in general terms, in the morning the longer shadow will run towards north-west, the shorther mid-day shadow, north, and the evening shadow north east.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It is generally accepted that rows running north/south make best use of the sun with no shady side.
