hanging basket tomatoes
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:07 »
Going to try and grow some hanging basket / container type toms this year.  I ideally want a free-standing hanging basket unit with maybe 3 baskets on it.  However, all the baskets look quite shallow - will they work?  Any recommendations?

I will also try some in free standing pots - will they grow tall or just spill over the side?

Varieties:  100s & 1000s, and Tumbling Tom Red.

Thx

I grew tumbling toms last year in a shallow basket, didn't get many toms off them. My best success was Garderners Delight in a grow bag got loads.  :) :)
Hurray finally retired
two plots now 31A and 35A

I've grown Tumbler for the last three years in hanging baskets.
First year they were great. I was collecting around 7lbs per week off six plants.
The last two years were total failures due to blight.   :(

Just greenhouse toms this year.

Hi tomatoes grow great in hanging baskets as long as they are kept fed and watered,  one year we had  so many the plants  got really heavy and we had to take them off their brackets

Now oh has put a round fence pole in the ground with a cross made from two strong battens across the top  and we hang them from these - not very ornamental for a garden though

It's just keeping them watered is the key
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Or a bit of Dithane in andy135's case!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks folks.  Think I'll risk a few in hanging baskets in a warm sheltered spot and the rest in big sacks in the mini greenhouses.  Just checked the seeds I planted two days ago - some are showing  8)

I planted Balconi Red into a hanging basket last year, but got a pittance of fruit.  Probably something to do with me not starting the seeds off until May !

hi,if only you could get enormous baskets, and moisture holding compost, they would work great.

I had lots of success with my hanging basket toms last year.  They are tiny but so tasty.  Had them in the front garden and they were commented on in the garden competion I came runner up in.

Definitely go for it if you have the ability to keep them watered.  Unusual and you get something to eat from them too!
