Bay Tree Seeds
« on: February 13, 2010, 00:03 »
I bought some bay tree seeds and the instructions said to plant the seed an inch deep and that light was required for germination.

I've been reading up on bay trees and I'm coming across conflicting information which says that seeds should be placed on the surface of the compost with a little dry compost sprinkled over the top and keep in a dark place.

I'm more inclined to use the suppliers method but wonder if anyone has any experience growing Bay/Laurel who could tell me how they done it?
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Difficult to get started and slow to establish, but romp away in the right spot and once get going.

Never tried seed - seems like a slow way of doing it to me - I'd be inclined to layer (air or conventional, have done both),  from a someone who's already got one, or plant up a sucker with a bit of root if available.

You could always try both sowing methods and report back.

Thanks, I have 4 seeds planted, think i'll fish two of them out and put them on top of the compost and see what happens.

Why not go to the local gardeb centre and buy a plant? They are cheap enough. :D

If I'd realised that before buying the seeds I would have but now that I have them and they are planted, I will see it through.
